Devotions for Baha'i Prisoners in Iran

Iranian Baha'i prisoners

In cities and villages across the globe, Baha'is are gathering in prayer to support the seven Baha'i leaders who have been imprisoned in Iran for the past two and a half years: Mrs. Fariba Kamalabadi, Mr. Jamaloddin Khanjani, Mr. Afif Naimi, Mr. Saeid Rezaie, Mrs. Mahvash Sabet, Mr. Behrouz Tavakkoli and Mr. Vahid Tizfahm.

These seven Baha’is were arrested in the spring of 2008 on false charges stemming from their roles administering to the basic needs of Iran’s Baha’i community. They were held in Evin prison in Tehran for nearly two years before their trial began. In August 2010 each of the defendants was sentenced to 20 years in prison—later reduced to 10 years. They are currently being held in Gohardasht prison in Karaj. Learn more.

On January 9, Baha'is in Portland will gather to pray for the release of these seven beleaguered individuals. The program will include:

  • Prayers and chants in Persian and English

  • Performance by the Ladder for the Soul Choir

  • A chance to gather and talk with Baha'is about the situation in Iran

  • Light refreshments

We welcome everyone to join us in showing support for these brave souls.
