1000th Anniversary of the epic tale “The Shahnameh”
Posted: 02/03/11

The Djanbazian Dance Company of Los Angeles will perform at the Shahnameh anniversary celebration.
2010-2011 is the 1000-year anniversary of the completion of the great epic tale The Shahnameh (The Book of Kings) by the Persian poet Ferdowsi. Ferdowsi has a unique place in Persian history because of the effort he made in reviving and regenerating the Persian language and cultural traditions, as his Shahnameh allowed much of the tongue to remain codified and intact.
This event is sponsored by the Andisheh Center and will include Shahnameh dance performances, short lectures and Naqqali (traditional Persian storytelling) by internationally renowned artists and professors:
- Ballet of the tale of Zal & Rudabeh by Djanbazian Dance Company of Los Angeles
- “Why Shahnameh is so important to Persian” by Dr. Dick Davis, Ohio State University
- Naqqali of the love story of Bijan & Manijeh by Dr. Iraj Anvar, Brown University
*Naqqali is a traditional form of Persian storytelling that used to be performed by naqqals (storytellers) in the qahveh khaneh (tea houses) all over Iran. They mostly sang and recited the stories from The Shahnameh.
