Portland Health for Humanity project: smoking prevention in elementary schools

Health for Humanity No Smoking Project

The Health for Humanity (HH) Portland Regional Network is entering its second year providing the smoking prevention program, "Smoking is Bad for You, No Ifs, Ands or Butts". This is an interactive program aimed at educating elementary school children (3-5th Graders) on the health, social and economic hazards of tobacco use. It was very well received last year when it was presented to The International School on the west side, Sunnyside Environmental School in SE Portland, Cathedral School in NW Portland, and public schools in Newberg. All the schools have asked for repeat programs this year and to possibly incorporate drug and alcohol use prevention.

HH members have diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise and interests. Current local network members have participated by ordering supplies, applying for grants and going to classrooms to present the smoking prevention program to students.

Health for Humanity is a Bahá'í-inspired organization that operates under the auspices of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of the US and offers local, national and international health promotion projects.  In the United States projects include promoting literacy, after school tutoring, La Leche Project, and Smoking Prevention Programs. Health for Humanity is a Socioeconomic Development Organization operating under the auspices of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá'ís of the United States.

At the local level, regional networks operate in a number of cities throughout the United States including the Portland-metro area.  Regional networks consist of a group of HH members within a locality that choose to work together to improve the health of their communities.  The regional networks provide opportunities for interchange of thought and working with community groups to inspire, channel, encourage, and implement service projects focused on health.
