Children celebrate World Citizen Day
On Sunday, November 8th, 2009, the Beaverton Baha'i Center was filled with families celebrating the 2nd annual World Citizen Day for the Westside Baha'i School fun day commemorating the Birth of Baha'u'llah. (For current Beaverton activities, click here.)
The day started with a Spanish Baha'i prayer, yoga from India, music from the Philippines and "We are Drops of One Ocean" in English and Japanese.
Next was a game of "Who Wants to be a World Citizen?" where a globe traveled around the room and when the music stopped, the child holding the globe was asked a question about another culture. Children could ask their neighbor, ask their community, or "call" a friend across the room if they needed help answering the question.
Tables were set up with interactive displays for India, Spain, the Philippines, Japan, El Salvador, China, Iran and Israel displaying art, food, music, games, language, religious and cultural information for each country. Children had passports and "traveled" to the various countries receiving a stamp from each country for their passport.
We finished the day with a multicultural family potluck with delicious food from India, the Philippines, Persian food, pizza and more! As one of the parents shared:
"We wanted to thank ... all of you for a wonderful Sunday morning and for the opportunity to share a few tidbits of our cultural heritage. Your warmth, enthusiasm and hospitality made it a real joy for us! Thanks so much!”
