Enjoy the warmth of purposeful community this month! In-person activities at the Portland and Beaverton Bahá’í Centers continue to grow, including with the return of children’s classes. Many virtual options may be found through our website calendar. All are invited!

Study: The Twin Manifestations

Friday Jan. 6, 4:00-5:30 pm, Dick's Primal Burger, 4905 SE Woodstock Blvd, Portland OR 97206.
Jennifer, Roger and I invite you to join us as we study the three sections of Ruhi Book 4:

1. The Greatness of This Day  2. The Life of the Bab  3. The Life of Baha'u'llah.
Book 4 allows participants to learn ways to share some of the memorable stories of the Twin Manifestations in a relaxed and supportive setting. 

We will be meeting for the study in a private meeting room at Dick's Primal Burger. Food and/or drinks can be purchased but it is not necessary. 
Please let one of us know by text/phone if you have any questions, would like to be part of this study, and if you need the book. Also please share with others who might be interested. We will be in touch before the first evening.

Online Dialog: Divine Art of Living

Friday Jan. 6 and Jan. 20, 7:30 pm. Please join my book deepening: The Divine Art of Living: Selections from the Writings of Baha'u'llah and Abdu'l-Baha, from the Baha'i Publishing Trust. You do not need to have the book or do any homework; we will read and discuss a few passages together each time we meet. Come to one or every meeting. Online Dialog: “Music as a Ladder for the Soul”

Sat. Jan. 7, 10:00-11:00 am. Speaker: Van Gilmer. Mr. Gilmer, renowned soloist, composer, and director, is the original organizer and director of the 80 member Bahá’í Gospel Choir that made its first debut appearance before a standing-room only audience in the Ramada Hotel Ballroom during the 2nd Bahá’í World Congress held in New York City in 1992.  Since then, he has directed several Bahá’í choirs and Interfaith Choirs, including a 100-member International Bahá’í Choir that toured western Europe in 2004. Van currently serves as the Music Director at the Bahá’í Temple in Chicago and has appeared three times at Carnegie Hall.  A Bahá’í for 56 years, Van has served on a variety of local and national Bahá’í administrative bodies and has been involved in the Civil Rights and Racial Justice movements since 1963 when he sat-in at the Woolworth’s Lunch Counter in Greensboro, NC. He is a member of several local Chicago area Human Rights Organizations and currently serves on the Village of Wilmette Human Relations Commission.

We will watch and discuss the OPB video "Beatrice Morrow Cannady, an Oregon Experience. Beatrice Morrow Cannady was a pioneer African American civil rights advocate in Oregon." She was also an early Portland Baha'i, the first Black woman to graduate from law school in Oregon, publisher of the Advocate newspaper, lecturer, and host of many interracial teas to bring together diverse people in friendship.

Gifts of the Spirit: The Spiritual Practice of Creative Writing Jan. 18-March 14. Work one on one with a mentor who is a published author and experienced editor to design and complete a creative project in the form of poetry, fiction, a personal essay, or a memoir. In preparation for embarking on this project, students will explore various practical and aesthetic questions relating to writing.

Interfaith Dialogue and Collaboration Feb. 1-March 21. The Bahá’í Faith is in a unique position to inspire interfaith endeavors because its scriptures contain the imperative to foster interfaith dialogue as a prerequisite for world peace.
